3.5 starsHaving discovered Elin Hilderbrand's books later in her career, I quickly fell in love with her more recent works. This summer, I thought it would be the perfect time to revisit Nantucket and delve into some of her earlier works. Unfortunately, I've found them to be average, at best.The Blue Bistro, however, intrigued me. The up-close-and-personal look at the upscale restaurant business was fascinating, as were the larger-than-life characters portrayed in this story. And let's face it, every time I picked this book up, I found myself heading to the kitchen for a snack. The descriptions of the meals had my mouth watering incessantly.Unfortunately, I didn't love Thatcher or Fiona's characters, and didn't have much sympathy for either. The ending of the book was pedestrian at best and sort of left the reader hanging. It's a shame too, as this could have been a 4 star book for me. The underlying premise is that it's okay to have an affair with your boss and that it turns out okay in the end if you are in a relationship (mostly sexual) with someone who is emotionally involved elsewhere. I didn't like that premise. Especially, toward the end, when we see the delicacy and specialness of Thatch and Fiona's relationship, it makes Thatch and Adrienne's all the more meaningless. Had the novel had a different ending, this would have been okay, lesson learned. Instead we get an unrealistic ending, that shows Adrienne to be a woman without self esteem, willing to take leftovers. Also, the over detailing of the restaurant business, was very tedious. I'm a fan of Elin Hilderbrand, but not this one.
